Get the Most of Your Mini Session
If I had a dime for every time someone has told me, “I’ll be happy if we get one good photo…” I am promising you now that you’ll receive so much more! I am confident that I can prompt and capture your love and your family on the fly. However, I want you to feel just as confident as I do going into your session. For this reason, I am sharing some thoughts and suggestions for you below.
Plan your outfit/s. We have 20 minutes, so let’s plan for one outfit for everyone. I know it’s common to focus on color vs. pattern or matching vs. coordinating. Consider something else: how do you want your photos to “feel”? What is the “mood” you are going for? Where will these photos live? (Please don’t say on your computer! (: Will they display well in your living room? Will they “feel” like you? After booking, you will receive a styling guide from me that is chock full of both inspirational and practical tips to help you coordinate outfits for your crew, but these are just some starter thoughts!
Arrive early, because trust me, there is nothing worse than starting your session off by feeling stressed. You never know – there could be traffic, limited parking, someone needs to use the restroom, etc. It’s better to arrive early and have a little time to relax before your session time.
If you have littles, let them be little. They don’t have to “be good”; they just need to be prepared for all of the fun they are going to have! And let me tell you, when kids feel free and uninhibited, they will have so much more fun. In 20 minutes, I can capture a full gallery of both classic, everyone-smiling-at-the-camera portraits and the authentic, joyful, in-between moments.
Plan a fun activity after. The time is already reserved on your calendar, everyone is dressed, and there. Make it a date and plan a fun activity together!
“We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand – and melting like a snowflake.” – Francis Bacon Sr.
Remember why you are taking the photos in the first place and have fun. There is a reason you are getting everyone dressed up for this session. This season of life won’t last forever and mini sessions are thee perfect opportunity to document your days. Print the photos, hang them on the wall, send them to Grandma, and put them in your kids’ scrapbooks to cherish for years to come.
