When to take maternity photos

First, if you are expecting, congratulations!! Eeee! What an exciting and precious time! I have thoroughly enjoyed the growth of my wedding business over the years to include maternity and family photography. As a wife, mom, and photographer, I can genuinely say that there is nothing like the feeling of anticipating and welcoming new life. It is such a gift within the journey of marriage and to the world. I wish you all the joy this season of life has to offer!

Planning Your Maternity Session

If you are thinking about or are currently planning a maternity session, remember that the goal is to document this precious stage of life as your journeying into motherhood. A maternity session documents the beauty of your changing body as it grows new life, while also captures this sweet, yet fleeting time with your husband and family. Pregnancy can make us feel a lot of different ways day to day, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable when taking your photos. This means we can move forward freely and confidently knowing there is no “right or wrong answers” when planning your session. I am sharing some general suggestions for timing, but your preferences may be different depending on your pregnancy experience so far.

Every photographer will have a slightly different answer here. In my experience, I have found a good range or answer to the question of “when to take maternity photos” is anywhere between 28 and 33 weeks. This is typically the best time to both show off your bump and take photos while you are still feeling great. However, it is never “too late” until you are in labor!

When to take Maternity Photos if you are Expecting Twins or more

If you are expecting twins or triplets, I would suggest booking your session earlier and planning to shoot sometime within the second trimester between 20 and 24 weeks. This will ensure you are feeling good and can still move around comfortably. Also, most twin + babies arrive early.

Falls Church VA Maternity Photos

How could I end this post without featuring such a beautiful session as this! This Falls Church VA maternity photo session features a sweet family of three before they welcomed their second baby boy. We did their photos at a lovely neighborhood park in Northern Virginia. I love their matching outfits in all white. This session feels so much like summer in Nova with its warm, glowing sun light, cool and breezy attire, and lush green foliage.

Scroll down to peruse their summertime Northern Virginia maternity photos, gather inspiration, and begin planning your session!
